As the importance of artists and creative business has become recognised as a key drive for economic, social and cultural well-being and growth, so the issue of creating an environment in which artists and creative enterprise can flourish has risen up the policy and strategy agenda in recent years. As a result a number of public and private initiatives have led to different models for workspace development. This seminar - a repeat of that held earlier this year - explores the origins and funding for these workspaces - and examines the details, and the opportunities these offer to the artists and creatives which occupy these developments. Education, training and lifelong learning are key priorities for the European Union, especially in the light of the goal of the Lisbon Agenda “to create the most competitive knowledge based economy in the world by 2010”.  New programmes begin in 2007 which will offer opportunities for support for projects and collaborations across Europe - and in the meantime, the Bologna Process continues its progress towards a new Higher Education Framework for Europe.

But what does all of this mean for the cultural sector?   

 

This conference will address these issues and questions.  The programme will include:

  • Updates on the new EU funding programmes for education (with presentations from both the UK agencies responsible for these programmes), and on the Bologna Process
  • Experts from Europe and the UK presenting and discussing a range of innovative projects and approaches to education and training across Europe
  • The UK launch of Another Brick in the Wall”, a new publication analysing cultural management education in Europe
  • An opportunity to join the debate about the relevance of education and training provision to the needs of employers
  • A chance to network with European and UK colleagues
