Running Successful Public Events
Organiser: ETN
Date: 05 September 2007
Location: Birmingham
Cost: see website
Organising events is increasingly part of the job for many of us, but is not something that most people have had specific training in.  Project officers often feel thrown in at the deep end.  This event aims to provide practical, down to earth advice for people who want to make sure that their community fun day, teddy bear’s picnic, concert or outdoor theatre event is a success.  It will cover issues which are common to all types of events such as planning and preparation, the health and safety of staff and people attending the event, publicity and working with contractors and artists.  It will also address strategies for when things go wrong and ways of evaluating and learning from past experiences. The event is suitable for front line staff and their managers.

You’ll get hands-on practice at writing and editing, with feedback from a professional.  Please note this is not a DTP course - it’s about improving your written communication skills and getting your message across   effectively.  This popular event is excellent for those new to producing newsletters, and for those of you who have been landed with it without any training!
Independent Creative Art Spaces Leadership Training
Organiser: Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF)

Date: 9-15 December 2007
Deadline: 01 September 2007
Location: Paris, France
Cost: Free (open call; only 10 places for Europeans)
Independent Creative Art Spaces Leadership Training is part of the Artists’ Networks and Autonomous Cultural Centers, an initiative set up by ASEF in 2003 aiming to contribute to the promotion of artists’ mobility, exchange of cultural professionals and exposure for cultural practitioners.  Implemented in partnership with artist-run-spaces, autonomous cultural centers and/or artists’ networks, the projects aim at encouraging discussions on issues such as cultural management strategies, contemporary artistic practices and to be a launch pad for eventual future collaborations between Asia and Europe. Managers of Independent Creative Art Spaces in general don’t receive formal arts management training though they are often leading cultural organizations that employ many people and exercise a great influence in the local context.  This five-day intensive workshop shall concentrate on the role and importance of the artists/manager in multi-disciplinary Independent Creative Art Spaces. Various interactive sessions shall examine different aspects of managing an art space in relation to real life case studies presented by the participants. Challenges in planning, human resources, budgeting, fundraising, communication as well as issues around community involvement and audience development will be discussed and presented.   This workshop shall offer an opportunity to reflect on how 20 artist/managers from Asia and Europe manage and lead their organization, to benchmark with others in the field and to learn new skills and approaches through experienced arts managers and trainers in the field. The training will empower them as leaders in their field and create a basis and opportunity for long term exchange and cooperation between participants. Full criteria and further info:
